Pick’s House — 1766 Sanderson

Our newest men’s PHP residence at 1766 Sanderson Avenue offers eight comfortable beds and brand-new furnishings on our Sanderson Avenue campus in Scranton’s historic Green Ridge neighborhood.

Pick’s House — 1766 Sanderson

Once a reflection of the region’s growth, opportunity, and social mobility during the coal and steel era, this home now carries that spirit forward as a place for renewal and transformation for people recovering from substance use disorder.

Its very presence helps reduce stigma and affirms that recovery belongs in the heart of our neighborhoods. It is a testament to the compassion, progress, and strength of our region’s recovery community.

A dedication in gratitude

In honor of Jerry Pickard

Jerry Pickard · Teacher, coach, and recovery mentor

Fellowship House dedicates Pick’s House at 1766 Sanderson Avenue in honor of Jerry Pickard, whose steady presence has helped people find their footing in classrooms, on tennis courts, and in recovery. For decades, he has offered something both simple and lasting: the attention of a person who believes another life can grow.

Rooted in Jessup and the Up Valley community, Jerry’s work as an educator and Valley View tennis coach has reached across generations. His coaching has combined encouragement, humor, and a commitment to helping players participate and improve. His care for students has extended beyond the court, including tutoring young people as they prepared for college. The lesson running through that work is that progress deserves patience, and everyone deserves a chance to take part.

Jerry brings that same spirit to recovery. In his AllBetter conversation with Joe Van Wie, he speaks candidly about his own experience, the place of faith in his life, and the relationships that helped him change. At Fellowship House, his mentoring and contributions have been a stabilizing force for young men rebuilding their lives. He reminds us that recovery is sustained through human connection: someone who listens, keeps showing up, and makes room for the next step.

His participation in the Jessup StorySlam reflects another part of that community life: sharing stories, recognizing one another, and finding meaning in the places and people we know.

Pick’s House honors Jerry’s ongoing service and the example he sets. This home carries forward our gratitude in a practical way: a welcoming place where men can begin again, build friendships, and work toward lives with more joy, purpose, and freedom. We are proud to dedicate it to him.
